When You Need a Full Kit vs. Just Wheels
Not every move needs the complete kit.
Just casters make sense if you already own a compatible towbar, you’re only repositioning a container short distances by hand or forklift, or you’re mounting casters permanently on a container that rarely moves once placed (a container home or site office, for example).
A full mobilization kit makes sense if this is a container you’ll move regularly, you don’t already have towing equipment compatible with the corner castings, or you’re moving loaded containers over any real distance, where directional control and braking matter more.
The cost difference between loose casters and a full kit is usually smaller than people expect, and buying the pieces separately later — once you realize you need a towbar or brake — often costs more in total than buying the kit up front.
Choosing the Right Kit for 20ft vs. 40ft Containers
Kit sizing comes down to two things: load capacity and container length, not just container type.
A 20ft container generally needs less caster capacity than a 40ft container of the same build, simply because there’s less structure and, usually, less cargo. But this isn’t a fixed rule — a fully loaded 20ft container can weigh more than an empty 40ft one — so always size the kit to the container’s actual loaded weight, not its length alone.
For longer containers, double casters are worth the extra cost more often than not: the added length means more weight distributed over the same four mounting points, and a wider wheel footprint per corner helps keep the load stable, especially outdoors.
