Container Wheels for Generator (Genset) Containers
Containerized diesel generators supply backup power to data centres and hospitals, and temporary power to construction sites, events and industry. They are heavy, and they often need to move: to a new spot on site, closer to the load, or out of the way for service. Instead of hiring a crane for every move, our container wheels lock into the ISO corner castings so you can roll the generator container into place.
How much does a generator container weigh?
As a rule of thumb, a 20 ft genset container of 500 to 800 kVA weighs around 10 to 15 tonnes. A 40 ft container of 1,000 to 1,500 kVA weighs around 18 to 25 tonnes. Fuel adds to that: diesel weighs about 0.84 kg per litre, so a full 2,000 litre base tank adds roughly 1,700 kg. Always use the weight on the manufacturer’s data sheet, including fuel.
Which wheel set fits a generator container?
| Generator container | Total weight incl. fuel | Wheel set (dynamic load per set of 4) |
|---|---|---|
| Small genset or empty 20 ft enclosure | Up to 5,400 kg | Compact, 5,400 kg |
| 20 ft genset, lighter configurations | Up to 13,500 kg | Pro or Pro SL, 13,500 kg |
| Heavy 20 ft or 40 ft genset | Up to 30,000 kg | Xtreme, 30,000 kg |
| Large multi-megawatt units | Above 30,000 kg | Custom solution, engineered for your container |

Why put a generator container on wheels?
- Reposition without a crane. Move the generator as the site layout changes.
- Service access. Pull the container out to reach doors, radiators or exhaust systems.
- Factory and test bed moves. Roll containers between assembly, load testing and dispatch.
- Reusable. Remove the wheels after the move and use them on the next unit.
Before you move a generator container
- Use the weight including fuel. Moving with a low fuel level reduces the load.
- The engine end is usually heavier than the control end. Check the centre of gravity on the data sheet.
- Disconnect power cables, fuel lines and exhaust extensions before moving.
- Check that all four bottom corner castings are ISO 1161 and undamaged. Frames without corner castings can be fitted with weld-on steel corner castings.
- Check that the ground can carry the corner loads, move slowly and set the brakes once in position.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a containerized generator weigh?
Typically around 10 to 15 tonnes for a 20 ft unit of 500 to 800 kVA, and around 18 to 25 tonnes for a 40 ft unit of 1,000 to 1,500 kVA, plus fuel. The exact figure is on the manufacturer’s data sheet.
Which wheels do I need for a 20 ft generator container?
Up to 13,500 kg in total, the Pro or Pro SL. Between 13,500 and 30,000 kg, the Xtreme. Heavier units need a custom solution.
Can I move a generator container with fuel in the tank?
Yes, as long as the total weight including fuel stays within the dynamic load capacity of the wheel set. A lower fuel level gives you more margin.
