1. Not checking the corner casting condition first

Shipping container wheels rely on a secure connection to the container’s ISO 1161 corner castings. If a corner casting is bent, rusted through, or was previously damaged by a crane spreader, the twist-lock won’t seat properly — even if the wheel itself is installed correctly. Before mounting any wheels for shipping containers, inspect all four (or eight, for larger sets) corner castings for visible damage or corrosion.

2. Jacking unevenly

Lifting one corner significantly higher than the others before mounting the next wheel puts uneven stress on the container frame and can make the twist-lock mechanism harder to seat correctly. Jack corners in a consistent, gradual sequence — typically diagonal pairs — rather than lifting one side fully before starting the other.

3. Skipping the twist-lock’s full rotation

The twist-lock mechanism on container wheels needs a full quarter-turn to engage properly — the same motion a crane’s spreader bar uses. A partial turn can look secure but won’t carry the rated load safely. Always rotate until you feel (and ideally hear) the lock seat fully, and visually confirm the locking tab has rotated into position.
